National Science Day 28 February

National Science Day: Celebrating the Spirit of Scientific Innovation

National Science Day is celebrated every year on February 28th in India to honor the remarkable contributions of scientists and to promote scientific temper among the public. This day marks the discovery of the Raman Effect by the legendary Indian physicist Sir C.V. Raman in 1928, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.

The day is not just a tribute to C.V. Raman, but also a reminder of the importance of science in daily life. Science is the foundation of progress, innovation, and problem-solving, and celebrating this day encourages people, especially students, to develop curiosity and analytical thinking.

Every year, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) announces a theme to highlight a specific area of scientific importance. Themes in recent years have focused on topics like “Science for Sustainable Future” and “Women in Science”, reflecting the changing priorities and challenges in the scientific world.

National Science Day is celebrated across schools, colleges, universities, and research institutions in India. Activities include:

  • Science exhibitions showcasing innovations and experiments.

  • Seminars and lectures by eminent scientists.

  • Competitions such as quizzes, debates, and essay writing on scientific topics.

  • Awards and recognitions to honor outstanding contributions in various scientific fields.

The Constitution of India emphasizes the development of a scientific temper, which means adopting a rational and evidence-based approach to problems and decisions. National Science Day serves as a reminder that science and technology are essential for national development, societal welfare, and tackling modern challenges such as climate change, health crises, and energy needs.

National Science Day is more than a commemoration; it is a celebration of curiosity, innovation, and knowledge. By inspiring young minds to pursue science, it ensures that the spirit of inquiry and discovery continues to drive India toward progress and excellence in the global scientific community
